Do you know that it is possible to sell your details without your knowledge. You may say YES thinking about mobile number and email id. WAIT... it is beyond that. Your debit card and credit card details are sold online for $ 10 - $ 100 on Dark web. How ???

As per the article published in Deccan Herald, it is done through skimming which means stealing data from cards when one swipes them at an ATM or POS terminals through specialised devices.

The other source may be database of service providers. You may have experienced that a Website / App seeks card details even when the service is free during the trial period and they will make it mandatory to provide details for using the free services.


Types of attacks used in stealing data :
  • Phishing: In this attack, hacker sends a mail or text message with a malicious link which when clicked gets installed on your device and steals the important data in it.
  • Vishing: The hacker makes you a call and indulges you in a discussion as if he were a banker or organiser of lottery and either gets your sensitive information of bank account like date of birth, Debit card number, CVV, or makes you to transfer money to get the lottery amount. This attack is also called as Voice Phishing.
  • Smishing: Phishing through SMS is called as Smishing.

Precautions:
  1. Never ever share the OTP.
  2. Don't save the cards on the sites that you don't trust.
  3. Change the PIN if you get any suspicion.
  4. Report to the bank immediately if you unauthorised transaction.
