Arattai, the messaging app was launched in 2021 by Zoho Corporation and is sensational now due to increasing awareness on the need for self-dependent country on every aspect (#AtmanirbharBharat) and US tariffs on Indian products and services. The name "Arattai" is a Tamil word which means "Chat" or "Conversation".
Within 7 days - app downloads in Google play store increased from 1 lakh to 50 lakhs+.
While most of its features are similar to other messaging apps, it is unique in terms of below features.
- We can set caller tune through app settings for free.
- Built in India using Indigenous technology infrastructure.
- We can schedule meetings with our friends and family.
- Document scanner feature in chats.
- Screen security (During app switching and screenshots / screen recording - screen will be blank if we enable this feature).
- Exporting chat from WhatsApp to Arattai (Works only if the other user has also Arattai account).
- Easy to use and even works on low end devices.
- Data is stored in Indian servers.
- "Till I reach" option while sharing live location.
- No data is shared with third parties nor is monetized.
- Pocket - for personal data storage like notes, media etc. (similar to self-chat in WhatsApp).
- Can be used on Android TV.
Other features yet to be added and growing demand from users are
- Chat encryption (as there is no explicit mention that chats are encrypted - it is assumed that they are not encrypted).
- Chat backups.
- Scaling of infrastructure as there is lag and quality issues while using the app due to unexpected increase in user base. (It is acknowledged by the founder, and according to him - they were planning to scale and market from November-2025 earlier, but due to the current changes - they have started working on it now).
- Setting ringtone for Arattai calls (It can be set indirectly through mobile settings -> App notifications -> Incoming calls)
- Chat lock and disappearing messages.
