Decoding Registration Numbers



Permanent Account Number (PAN):

PAN is a 10-digit unique alpha numeric number allotted to the taxpayers in India. E.g. AACCA8464F
  • First 5 and 10th character will be alphabets and the remaining are numbers.
  • First three characters range from AAA to ZZZ.
  • Fourth letter indicates status of taxpayer like P - individual, F- firm, C - company, A - Association of persons (AOP), B - Body of individuals (BOI), T - Trust, L - Local authority, G - Government, J - Artificial Juridical person.
  • Fifth character is the first letter in name of person or entity.
  • Sixth to ninth characters are numbers ranging from 0001 to 9999.
  • Tenth letter is a check digit.

Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN):

GSTIN is a 15-digit alpha numeric number allotted to the person registered under GST. 
Eg: 27AACCA8464F1ZM
  • First 2 characters indicate state code.
  • Next 10 digits pertain to PAN of the registered person.
  • 13th digit indicates no. of registrations in the same state.
  • 14th digit is always Z by default.
  • 15th digit is a check sum digit.

Corporate Identity Number (CIN):

CIN is a 21-digit alpha numeric number allotted to the companies registered with Registrar of Companies (ROC). Eg: L17110MH1973PLC019786
  • First letter indicates whether it is a listed company(L) or unlisted company (U).
  • Next 5 digits indicate industry code.
  • Next 2 letters indicate state.
  • Next 4 digits indicate Year of incorporation.
  • Next 3 letters indicate type of company.
  • Last 6 digits indicate registration number.
Below are the codes that indicate type of company
PLC - Public Limited Company
PTC - Private Limited Company
OPC - One Person Company
GOI - Government of India Company
SGC - State Government Company
GAP - General Association Public
GAT - General Association Private
ULL - Public Limited Company with unlimited liability
ULT - Private Limited Company with unlimited liability
NPL - Sec.8 Company -Not for Profit Company
FLC - Finance Lease Company as Public Limited
FTC - Subsidiary of foreign company as a Private Limited company.

Verify CIN and know about the company like Share capital, its directors, last filed annual returns etc.

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN):

TAN is also a 10-digit alpha numeric number allotted to the persons responsible for tax deduction and collection as prescribed under the Income Tax Act. Eg: BLRA02911G
  • First 3 letters indicate the city or state in which it is issued.
  • Next letter indicates the first letter of name.
  • Next 5 digits are system generated numbers.
  • Last letter is the check digit.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) License:

FSSAI number is a 14-digit unique number allotted to the food business operators.
Eg: 10411012000075
  • First digit indicates whether it is a license (1) or registration (2).
  • Next 2 digits indicate the licensing authority ( 00 - Centre , 01 - Andhra Pradesh .....)
  • Next 2 digits indicate last 2 digits of year in which business is started.
  • Next 3 digits signify the Designated / Registrar officers.
  • Last 6 digits indicate the serial number of the business under the respective officer.
